Migraine and Obesity - What You Should Know
Obesity is a global epidemic that can cause devastating health problems. The link between obesity, heart disease and diabetes is well documented, but many people do not know about the link between obesity and headaches.
Do You Know Your BMI?
BMI (Body Mass Index) is the tool that is commonly used to measure our levels of obesity. A BMI of 30 or more could put you at risk of suffering from chronic headaches on a daily basis. A BMI of 30 to 35 puts you in the class I obesity bracket. Research has shown that headaches can start to appear when a person gains weight and goes above a healthy BMI. A healthy BMI of 20 seems to be the answer for avoiding headaches that are weight related.
Whether you have suddenly put on weight, it has piled on over time or you have been overweight all your life, aiming to get your weight down to a healthy BMI is a sensible solution to headaches and other medical issues.
Is Your Weight Causing Chronic Headaches?
In the 60s and 70s, research was carried out on people suffering from headaches. The reason for this research was that more and more people were suffering from headaches, but physicians had no idea why. Coincidentally, it was around this time that the average US waistline started to expand and experts realized there was a direct connection between obesity and headaches.
What has not yet been determined, however, is whether this problem is genetic or whether the headaches occur as soon as the body starts to become obese. These studies are still ongoing and you can be sure we will bring you an update as soon as we can.
There also seems to be a link between a person’s metabolism and their susceptibility to headaches. Strangely, there were also increased headaches in patients who were underweight.
