A Word About Headaches—When Painkillers Are Part of the Problem

What is the first thing you do when you experience headache symptoms? Well, if you reach for the painkillers, you are not alone. Millions of us do this and it is little wonder that the pharmaceutical industry is booming.

But did you know that by taking painkillers on a regular basis, you could be making the problem worse? Anybody can drop into their local drugstore and pick up a pack of painkillers. It is the frequency of use and dosage that could be causing your headache.

Are You Taking Too Much Pain Medication?

Medication overuse is a very common problem in the US, and one that is growing on a daily basis. We are often told to take a pill for this, and a pill for that. We trust the advice we are given regarding dosage on pain relief packaging and we assume that as long as we stay within those limits, we will be okay.

However, taking too many pills over a short period of time can make your headache worse rather than better. Research has shown that taking pain relief for 10 or 15 days a month could actually cause a headache rather than cure it.

Medication Overuse Headache—Are You Your Own Worst Enemy?

Medication overuse headache is as its name describesa headache brought on by the overuse of medication. Frequent headache sufferers find themselves in a vicious cycle where their headache gets worse the more medication they take. They reach for even more medication to cure the headache, and the cycle continues.

If you are heading to the medicine cabinet the moment those headache symptoms appear, stop and think about whether you really need to take painkillers or if you can wait it out. Something as simple as taking a drink of water, resting or having a good nightquo;s sleep can sometimes relieve headache symptoms
